Breaking Benjamin

Saturday, March 19th we saw Breaking Benjamin! What a great show! Too bad Jason's sinuses were bugging him, he'd have had a much better time. And I went in migraine free (I was feeding myself the drugs).

The show was at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus near OSU. This place is a lot like Bogarts which is in Cincinnati near UC. We used to go to Bogarts a lot since Jason went to UC. Ahhh, the memories of the slums of Cincinnati!

Ok, so we stood in line for about a half an hour to get in. And in line I notice that we are old. We have a good 10 years (and probably 50 pounds) on the kids around us. But, they're all nice and fun kids, so it's all good. Too bad it was freezing. One way that you can tell you are older than the crowd, you are wearing coats when it's cold... they are not.

While waiting in line, I notice this girl who is reminiscent of Sarah Michelle Gellar. She ends up becoming an ally of mine and I just feel that first sight, is when to mention.

So, men in one line ladies in another for the pat down. This is the place where the guy from Pantera got shot, so they are taking no chances.

The Newport isn't very large... you start to notice all the familiar faces that pass over and over. I tend to make up stories for people. The Dealer, was all over. Guy with a nice face dressed in all black. With all the signals. The Mom who brought her teenage daughter and friend to the show. The Grandparents who were rocking out to everything... I thought they were parents of someone in one of the bands... no... just freaks. Then there was HipHop Brendan Fraser with the Hos. And Dreads... he worked there... seemed cool, if he hadn't let Brendan and his Hos into the would area.

OK, getting of track...

First band was The Exies. Great band... but a Nirvana knock off. That's probably more of a complement... Nirvana was good. But, these guys need some originality.

Second band was Theory of a Dead Man. Again.. good music. These guys were more original. Still, just didn't move me.

Then... sigh... Breaking Benjamin!

The lead singer was kinda sick and had the audiance do a lot of singing. This was cool, since most of the audiance knew the shit.

We were standing behind the sound area (fenced off with a sad "fence"). Brendan knew Dreads and was allowed to bring his tall, skinny hos in. Who ended up in front of me and Sarah Michelle. At one point, they looked like they were asking Brendan "who is this again?". Sarah and I looked at each other and were ready to kill. We are both actual fans of the band, there to listen and see them. I had many fantasies of bashing they're little heads together. oh well.

The show was sold out, partially because the show in Dec was cancelled and they were accepting the tickets from that one. People were dancing and singing and just rocking out everywhere. The Grandparents were trying to get college kids to head bang with them... oh, that was the funniest.

After the first set, Ben came out and did "Rain". Ahhhh.... The rest of the band joined him near the end... then they only did 2 more songs. Never did "Blow Me Away" which I expected. Oh well, maybe we'll see them in Cincy. May 14th... would make me a good birthday present! Hints to Jason!

These are the best kind of shows. When a band is on the cusp of becoming a huge hit and still on the small venue circuit, their shows are all about fun and music and not the hype. Of course, once the ride is over, the older bands do the same circuits. And Rollins, but he's just incredible.

This isn't the most well done of blogs... but I had to rush it to get to my other stuff. And I had to get this up. I've had requests!

Oh! The Dealer came back with the Old Cowgal... the Mother moved the girls the hell out of the way. Dealer found a willing customer... and tried his own goods. There was what I didn't miss form these types of shows.
